You’ll need a permit when you make structural improvements to your property, including installing a window or changing the layout by knocking down walls and adding more space to the bathroom. The same happens when relocating the sink or toilet or transforming a tub into a shower, which requires new supply and drain lines; the same occurs when altering walls or adding electrical fixtures.

Many contractors assert that you do not need a permit every time you modify a wall or remodel a bathroom, that it is cosmetic work, and that it is not required to pull a permit. Unfortunately, that may signal that you are dealing with unlicensed contractors and tradespeople.

The main reason for remodeling a bathroom with a permit is that inspectors can ensure the job is correctly done and up to code. As a result, it protects your health, safety, and anyone who may one day buy your house. Additionally, permits safeguard your investment as a homeowner, reducing the likelihood of costly mistakes and unnecessary fines.

Most of the time, you can stay at home while remodeling your bathroom. However, if this is the only bathroom you have, we advise finding a bathroom with your family, going to a club, going to the gym, or briefly utilizing a friend’s restroom.

Your home will typically function at the end of the day, depending on the stage of your remodeling. However, there can be brief periods when the water or power may be turned off when adding a new circuit or line while connecting to the existing plumbing or electrical system.

Bathroom remodeling prices range widely; the vast price difference is primarily due to the difference in pricing between your choice of finishes and the work to be completed. For example, relocating your toilet to an entirely different location or moving vanities to other walls requires careful planning, plumbing, and structural work.

Similarly, multi-head showers with a rain head and wall head from a top-quality brand on the market will increase the price. In contrast, a bathroom with a “simple” layout, with just some simple updated fixtures from a local supplier, will not be as expensive.

You can complete renovations that don’t involve plumbing, rewiring, or tiling in as little as two days. Even a significant change should take no more than a week.

The remodeling timeline varies depending on the construction crew and the size of the bathroom. Demolition usually takes a day, electrical work and plumbing another day, and closing your walls may take one or two days with new insulation and drywall. Finish work requires two to three days.

Behind-the-scenes changes alone require at least three days. Therefore, a reasonable expectation for the complete overhaul of an average-sized bathroom is two to three weeks.

Depending upon your selections and material availability, expect it to take longer.
